I have been fishing the surf for many years, and in my travels, I have used many different products intended for the surfcaster. The severe environment surrounding the rocks and coves of Montauk, Long Island has made my choice of gear an experiment in durability/ Either the stuff works, or it is relegated to the corner of my man cave known as the Goog locker. Of all the equipment that I have gone through, there are few that have held up to my requirements. AquaSkinz products have always afforded the quality and durability that I expect. Here is a short list of Aquaskinz products that I find indispensable.
As a swimmer and rock hopper, gloves have become a necessity among my many accoutrements. I always wear the things, spring, summer and fall, not only to keep my hands warm, but also to guard against line cuts and the crags and snarls so common in the rocky surf. I have even had my fingers chomped on by the occasional bluefish, whose teeth were foiled by the leather and Kevlar padding. I love these gloves, and they have become a mainstay of my gear.
In the fall, when fierce Nor-Easters blow across the Montauk rocks, I often reach for my Hurricane jacket, to stay comfortable and dry. The Hurricane top is one of the only jackets on the market that will allow a wave to wash over my head, and still keep me in the action. On days that are less demanding, but still engender a bit of a chill, I will wear a Raptor top. This top is lightweight, rugged and waterproof, and is adequate for temperatures into the forties, in which, I am quite comfortable.
One of the most valued AquaSkinz products for me is the wading belt. I hang everything important (pliers, knife, stringer, hook puller, etc.) from that belt. I especially appreciate the Velcro clasps that make the adjustment for thicker clothing fast and painless. The snap buckle, that is almost a trademark of Aquaskinz gear, is especially suited for quick change situations.
Last, but by far from the least in importance to my paraphernalia, is the tackle bag. I have been using the same medium lure bag, with its multitude of storage pockets for years now and I have only set it aside for the Elite Hunter Pro 4 tube bag which I expect to last a lifetime.
I have only touched on a few of the many specialized products that Aquaskinz has available to the dedicated surfrat. These tools have become the mainstay of my “Extreme Fishing” gear and I don't see any other manufacturer in the market that could stand up to the punishment of the Montauk surf. I would highly recommend that you get acquainted with the Aquaskinz line of products and grab a few things for your surfcasting inventory.
I'm on the NOFO in the place where Jack Yee lost his buddy in the 70's.
ReplyDeleteKadir is the Man! Also a good friend. I trust him to be able to swim out of anything!
Like you I use his Elite pro hunter double barrel bag & bucktail case. The pliers sheath never slows me down.
Oh yea... Force fin Pros are suggested.
I think that their gloves are their best product, especially with the new-and-improved casting fore-finger.
