Computers suck! Someone (who shall remain nameless!) sent me a Trojan Horse virus that totally screwed my Tower for the last 3 weeks! I am sorry that I have been AWOL, especially since the surf has been dynamite! Oh well, I guess you all been getting reports from Jack Yee...... Well, as you know the point was closed, and then opened again last week. Bass galore in the 15-25 pound class. Mostly on the southside fort, and the lighthouse. Shag has also produced big time. I had a death in my family to add to my misery, so I have been dry docked for a while. I intend to start casting real soon though, as should you, cause the run is under weigh!
Fish are around. You can smell them in the wind. The surf is still pretty rough, but there are places where you can still be successful. Look for the cuts on the soothsaid to cast into. The north side is also productive at dawn and dusk. The tournament is on and there are quite a few casters out this way.
Fishin lately has been something else. I go down to the weed bowl and see 5 campers and 10 buggies. Nobody is fishin? What is the point of this? You can go camping at Yellowstone. Or maybe they wait till midnight. Anyway, they all left at sunset, cause they didn't see any birds. THERE AIN'T NO BIRDS YET! The bait is not thick, BUT THE BASS ARE! How about fishin when you go fishing..... I had 5 fish last night in the bluff area. Two over 20 pounds. Conditions are looking good for no seeum blitz action this weekend... if you got the onions to get beat up in a 5-7 ft. swell..... You know what.... Just stay home.... I'll tell you how it was........
The action out this way is starting to pick up. Some blitz conditions early in the week at Turtle cove. Town beaches have had bass and weakfish also. Southside is very rough this weekend because of the associated weather- Hurricane off shore. I had a good skishing trip on the north side last night . i released 2 bass 25-12 pounds. The bluffs looked real good this morning, in a Norwest wind and a 3-5 ft swell. I lost one nice fish. That was it. This area should get hot if the swell and wind holds for a couple of days. Go fishin!
Things are getting interesting on the south and north sides. The rocks have some serious fish in the nighttime. I lost a trophy bass to a snapped 6/0 Gamagatsu circle hook on Thurs night. My heart is still skipping! Some big stuff also came out of the rips this week. Bait is congregating.... Fall approaches..... Lets go fishin!
The week was slow out this way. Nothing to much to speak about. . A few bass taken on the south and north sides early in the week. Hey! Buy a copy of Field and Stream! There is a feature article about yours truly in it for the month of September. Fall is coming before you know it!
The weeks fishing news was slow. Lots of heat, few fish. Most were taken from the rocks in the dark or from the sand on bait in the dark. Lots of porgies and fluke in close for you pin hookers out there. I had a good skishing trip last night with fish up to 24 pounds in the south side rocks. T-shirts are now in for those of you who would like to support this site and get a really cool image!
This week was good for those who ventured into the surf out here in Montauk. Some high 30's bass and big weakfish were to be found on the sand beaches in the wee hours of the morning. I had a good skishing trip on Fri. Looks like there was some big bait around. Probably sand eels. Porgies may be had from the beaches on the north side, along with a few fluke. The weather is expected to improve some next week. The fall blitz is not far off!
Things may seem to have slowed down out here, but in essence, they have not. Big fish continue to frequent the rips, with fish over 40 pounds being taken almost daily by the fleet. Jones reef , the bluffs and the bars have had their share of quality fish. This has been kept quiet and has been occurring on the outer rocks, during the drop, in the dark. South side nighttime action is also pretty good. The rule of thumb is that if you can fish the south side rocks in the dark, do it!
The sand continues to produce some big catches. 30's and 40's along with a 47, caught by a novice on a clam belly, were seen on the town beach and points west. The rocks harbor big fish for those intrepid souls. High surf this week has the water sanded up. but this should improve by Sat. night, if not sooner. North side is also producing, but being kept quiet by the Murderer's row boys. Old men... old ways...
The bass have been thick this week, as bait returns to the sand beaches. Thirties, and forties are in the surf from Ditch to Georgica. Surface plugs are working well. Most action is in the dark or sunrise-set. The Viking has been hooking up bigguns on their nighttime bass trips.
You should be fishing out here in Montauk. Last twelve hours have yielded fish in the 40's and 50's. The south side rocks are the spot. Town beach had a 40 on a tin at 5pm yesterday evening, this morning saw a 52.5 pounder come out of the rocks in the Land 'O'Giants. Darter was the lure, in da dark. YOU SHOULD BE FISHING!!!
Eric ernst took a 50 pounder this morning from the southside rocks. The town is crowded with tourists. Fish are on the sand beach and in the rocks, although with the passing low pressure yesterday, the surf is high. There is also a strong rip. The point was dirty this morning. I had several nice bass up to 35 pounds while skishing this week. The summer trends have begun as the surf water temps are in the low 60's. Lots of bait around.
There is no truth to the rumor that the fort has been closed. What is closed is the cliff at Shadmore, which is west of Ditch Planes and east of town beach. Big fish continue to frequent the rips of the south side rocks. The north side bars are also starting to see action in the night.
Things were hot and cold this week. Most of the oft ventured spots were a bust as far as quality fish were concerned. Hit or miss was the call for the south side rocks. I heard of a few bass in the 20's taken from the deep south. The north side was also slow, with a few fish landed at the north and false bars. Town beach was the hero of the week, with abundant blues, bass and weakfish in the wash for the last 3 mornings in a row.
The weatherman says it is gonna rain till hell freezes over... The fishing is getting good for the weekend with fish showing up on the north and south sides Friday afternoon. Still lots of bait around. I have heard of 10-12 inch shad on the south side beaches. Along with these reports are rumors of a 50+ being speared off the town beach by a free diver this week. If I were you, I'd be fishin!
The weather is poor today. Fishing for the week was very good for the late spring. Several fish in the high twenties and low thirties were taken from the rocks on the south side. I did a few bass skishing this week. The largest was around 20 pounds.
The water out this way has been loaded! lots of bass and blues on the north and south side. Some on big bait, some on small stuff. The fish are ranging from fleas to 40 pounds. Weather has been awful.
The eclipse was hot! lots of fish on the south side, with some fish showing up at the bluffs also. The past few days had fish on the beach at Ditch and the Sewer Pipe. South East winds. They still like the small Storm Jigs.
Hey! Welcome to the new 2003 version of the Melnyk report! This week has seen the resurgence of Bass, Blues and Fluke in the Montauk surf. Large baits such as herring, bunker, and shad had gannets diving in the wash on the south side. Town beaches, White sands and Ditch plains were the places to be at sunrise and sunset. Storm plastic jigs were the hot plug of the week, along with Yozuri Mag Darters. It is a good start to the new year!
